eClinicalWorks integration for the A.I. front desk

eClinicalWorks shares patient and provider data through its FHIR API. Booking, cancelling and rescheduling run through an HL7 scheduling interface that eClinicalWorks' interface team builds for your practice, for a fee.

Built for: Medical practices and groups on eClinicalWorks

What the connection does

What the front desk can do in eClinicalWorks.

  • Look up existing patients

    Yes
  • Create new patients

    With setup

Through the HL7 interface eCW sets up.

Through the HL7 interface eCW sets up.

  • Read providers and locations

    Yes
  • See open appointment times

    With setup

HL7 cannot ask for open times, so availability is mirrored from the schedule feed eCW sends.

How booking works

From the call to eClinicalWorks.

eClinicalWorks sends every schedule change over the HL7 interface, so our side keeps a current copy of your schedule. The front desk books, moves and cancels by sending the matching HL7 messages back to eClinicalWorks.

What you will need

  • An HL7 scheduling interface from eClinicalWorks (per-interface fee)
  • eCW's approval for FHIR access

Setup

How we connect eClinicalWorks.

  1. 01

    Order the interface

The practice asks eClinicalWorks' interface team for an HL7 scheduling interface to our system. eCW charges per interface.

  2. 02

    Register for FHIR access

We register for eCW's FHIR API, which eCW reviews and approves, for patient and provider data.

  3. 03

    Test, then go live

Messages are tested in both directions with eCW before live calls start.

eClinicalWorks integration questions, answered.

Do we have to change anything about how we use eClinicalWorks?

No. eClinicalWorks stays your system of record. The front desk works inside the schedule, appointment types and providers you already have, and your team keeps working in eClinicalWorks as they do today.

Why does eClinicalWorks need an interface?

eCW does not offer self-serve booking through its API. Its supported booking path is an HL7 scheduling interface, which its interface team builds and charges for per interface.
